The first mobility scooter that was introduced to the market on a mass-scale was most likely the original Luggie scooter back in 2005. The Luggie was very popular when it was first released because it was the only scooter at the time that you could fold up and store in the trunk of a small car. Prior to the first folding scooter being released, you would need to have a platform lift or a mobility scooter that disassembles in order to transport your scooter in a vehicle.
Luggie scooters are still being produced today and there are several different models that we offer designed and manufactured by Luggie. The original Luggie scooter was released in 2007 and had very limited features. Since then, there have been many manufacturers like Pride Mobility, Drive Medical, and Merits Health USA that released their own type of folding mobility scooters.
A folding mobility scooter is just like a regular mobility scooter, with one clear distinction - it folds up into a compact shape. In general, mobility scooters that fold up are designed to be stored easily while you travel on airplanes, trains, or by car. Simply collapse the scooter and pack it away. Aside from having a very compact shape that can easily be stored into the trunk of small cars, these folding mobility scooters are also very lightweight which makes them easier to carry. Having the right folding model makes it easy to travel and transport your scooter because they're lightweight and easily storable. Whether you're going on a cruise or on an airplane ride, these scooters are certainly capable of tagging along with very few challenges.
Currently, there are two primary types of foldable scooters on the market. One type is the manual folding mobility scooter which requires the user to manually fold the scooter. The other type is called an automatic folding mobility scooter which folds automatically with the push of a button. There are many different models that fold manually and that fold automatically available on our site, all of which are vetted for reliability.
Manual folding scooters typically are better priced and aren’t usually prone to long-term electrical failure because they don't have as many electrical parts.
Automatic folding mobility scooters are great if you lack the strength needed to fold a scooter manually. They usually also have more features since they’re considered a premium type of scooter. Auto folding mobility scooters come with a key fob which is used to fold the scooter automatically. There is usually a manual override option just in case the battery dies.
When shopping for any type of powered mobility device on our website, we always recommend taking the time to research all of the relevant specifications. You can find specifications for each product directly on the product page in the product details section. For folding scooters, we recommend paying attention to these specifications in particular:
- Overall Weight - The overall weight is very important, you need to make sure that its light enough to carry for the person who will be using it or for the person that will assist in transporting it.
- Weight Capacity - The weight of the user needs to be less than the weight capacity of the scooter or else you may risk damaging the unit and/or injury to the user. We recommend that you get a unit with at least 50 lbs of wiggle room between the user’s weight and the weight capacity of the unit.
- Seat Width - The seat width is a key specification that should be checked to ensure that the user fits comfortably in the chair. We recommend measuring the width of a comfy chair that the user is already using at home to ensure that you get a mobility scooter with the same size width.
- Armrest Options - Some of the lighter folding models don’t have armrests to save on weight. Other folding models come with armrests that either fold up or that are fixed. It’s important to know what your armrest options are prior to making a purchase.
- Travel Range - Just like all scooters that run on batteries, folding models will have different travel ranges. Some models come with small batteries to save on weight, while others have bigger batteries that are designed to last longer on a full charge. It’s important to know how long your scooter will travel on a full charge.
- Top Speed - Folding mobility scooters are equipped with a speed adjustment knob that allows you to control the speed of the scooter. The top speed is a specification that some users will want to pay close attention to, especially if they have a “need for speed”.
- Overall Length, Width & Height - Depending on how you plan on transporting your scooter, the dimensions of the scooter are going to be important. Knowing the length, width, and height of the unit (both folded and unfolded) is recommended before purchasing. This will ensure that your unit will fit into the area you plan on storing or transporting your scooter in.
Searching for the right model that suits your needs is easy when you use our website filters on the left side of the page (or above the products if you're on a mobile device). You can apply filters for total weight, weight capacity, brand, price range, and more. We carry a wide variety of options that vary in price and comfort factors for you to choose from. Don't hesitate to call one of our expert mobility representatives that can help walk you through the process of choosing a reliable folding mobility scooter.
Without question, the manufacturer Solax has a strong grip on the folding mobility scooter industry. Their most popular folding unit would be the Solax Transformer Automatic Folding Scooter. It automatically folds by the press of a button on the FOB. This is a great feature for users who do not have the strength to manually manipulate a scooter that can weigh in excess of 50lbs. If budgetary concerns are present, you can opt to purchase a Solax Mobie Plus which is a manual folding mobility scooter. There is simply a lever that you must engage to begin the folding process.
Golden Technologies Buzzaround Carry-On
One of the newest folding mobility scooters released in 2020 is the Golden Buzzaround "Carry On" model. With this model, the maximum speed is about 1mph faster than the Mobie Plus so if top speed is a feature you care about, you might want to consider the Carry On. It also has the latest designed technology since it was recently released and Golden has also applied for a patent for some of the features they have designed into their model.
The Gypsy Scooter by EV Rider
Another new model would be the Gypsy Scooter. This unit has a modern design that is made from EV Rider. You can view this model in action by clicking on the product link. It is important to note that this is a manually folding mobility scooter. The weight capacity is lighter and only comes in at 250lbs. So if a larger weight capacity is important, you will want to consider another option.
The Heartway Teqno AF Scooter
One of the fastest folding mobility scooters release in 2019 would be the Heartway TeQno AF S26. The max speed is 6MPH which is 1MPH faster than the Carry On by Golden Technologies. The travel range is also a very generous 15 miles which is very exceptional when you consider that it also has a fast top speed. Because of the larger batteries and stronger motors, it does weigh a bit more than some of the lighter mobility scooters. So this is a sacrifice you will need to make if a long travel range and faster top speed is important to you. It does have a modern appearance that many people love.
The Luggie Super Plus 4 Wheel
The 5th most popular model that we will be reviewing will be made by Freerider and is the Luggie Super Plus 4 which has a travel range of 10 miles which is pretty standard but you do have the option to upgrade to a 25 mile battery! This would make this unit to have the best travel range from the 16.5 AH Lithium battery. This is the perfect heavy-duty folding mobility scooter due to its weight capacity which can hold up to 360lbs.
All of the folding handicap scooters for sale at MobilityScootersDirect.com are designed to be compact and easy to travel with. Warranties for the products we carry vary by manufacturer. Manufacturer warranties tend to have some similarities such as extending the longest amount of coverage on structural parts like the frame. They are also known for providing limited coverage for items that are prone to wear and tear like the tires. In most cases, the electronics are covered for up to a year and some manufacturers also include a service contract in addition to the warranty.
A service contract involves a period of time where the customer is eligible for labor and repairs at no cost to the customer. Manufacturers like the ones listed below offer 1-year in-home service contracts in addition to the standard warranty that is offered. We strongly recommend buying products from manufacturers that offer in-home service contracts as it provides peace of mind for the first year.
These Manufacturers Include a 1-Year Service Contract With The Purchase of Every Scooter
NOTE: Merits Health USA offers in-home service contracts for a fee
Some of the manufacturers offer the option to upgrade to a 2-year service contract which you can see on the product page for each scooter in the “Customize Your Order” section as shown below.
Like all of the scooters that we carry, your product will arrive with a user manual that contains specific troubleshooting information for your product. You can find the user manual for your product by searching the product page section that has user manuals and brochure links. If you are having a hard time obtaining a user manual, give us a call and we will email you one.
Many of the manufacturers include a beep code reference guide which can be used to self-diagnose your scooter based on the number of beeps you hear in a sequence after a fault is detected. When a scooter has an issue, like when the scooter is not in drive mode, it will start beeping or light will flash a certain number of times. In the event that your scooter is beeping, listen to how many beeps are being made in a sequence, and then reference your troubleshooting guide. Below is an example of Pride Mobility scooter’s beep code reference sheet.
If you’re an existing customer that has a product under warranty, simply give us a call to see if we can help you troubleshoot. We can also help you file a warranty claim should you need a technician. If you purchased a product by Pride Mobility, Enhanced Mobility, Drive Medical, E-Wheels (medical products), Golden Technologies or Merits, then you may still qualify for in-home service without any additional fees.
Mobility Scooters that fold up generally require the same maintenance as a normal one does. The most common part that needs replacing is always the battery, especially in the warmer states like Florida where batteries only last about a year and a half. Most of the folding scooters that we carry come with Lithium batteries but some come with Sealed Lead Acid. In order to avoid damaging your batteries, it's important that you read the user manual to ensure you’re using your batteries properly. The best practice is to never let the battery completely drain to 0% charge. It's recommended that you charge your battery before it reaches less than 20% capacity.
Over long periods of time, you may notice that your folding mobility scooter has debris or build up around the mechanical parts that are used to fold the unit. Every 6 months, we recommend checking your scooter for debris build-up and simply using a clean rag to clean it up. You can also use a vacuum to get debris out of the floorboard, motor, wheels, and other tight places that are hard to reach.
If you’re looking to get your scooter covered through insurance like Medicare Part B there are a few things that you need to know. First, it's not something that will happen overnight, generally, the process can take anywhere from 6 months to a year to get approved. If you’re in a hurry to get in a scooter quickly, you’ll want to go the private-pay route. Many customers that start off wanting to use insurance to purchase a product from us end up going the private pay route because of how long it can take and all the red tape. Private insurances work a little differently, some offer prepaid spending cards that are to be used for medical purposes. Each insurance provider is different and we recommend that you call your insurance provider directly to get accurate information regarding your policy and what it includes. We do not bill through insurance, unfortunately, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a scooter with us. To learn more about insurance for mobility scooters, visit this page.
In our experience, not everyone gets approved for the model they want. At best, customers get coverage for a mobility scooter that meets certain requirements. In most cases, folding or recreational scooters are not eligible for coverage but standard scooters can be. Using insurance works in 2 ways most of the time. You can either get reimbursed for your purchase after you pay for it privately or you can find a dealer that bills through insurance. With the reimbursement program, insurance providers will reimburse you after making the purchase privately, sometimes the will reimburse you 100% or only partially.
Unlike other types of scooters, folding ones will ship relatively quickly. On average it takes about 3 to 7 business days to arrive after the order is placed. Since these scooters are much lighter in weight compared to standard or full-size models, they don’t require freight shipping. Instead, they ship via regular shipping carriers like FedEx or UPS depending on the manufacturer and model you select.
With most of the folding senior scooters that we offer for sale, you’ll find that there are up to 3 shipping options. First, is the standard free-shipping option. Second is the “Inside Delivery” option which means the driver will bring the scooter into the home. The third is the “White-Glove” delivery option which includes a third party that will receive the unit locally, then deliver it to your home. The third-party technician will also offer to show you how to use the unit in your home and they’ll also offer to discard the boxes. For some customers that don’t have any assistance and lack the dexterity to unbox a product, White-Glove Delivery may be a good option. If you have someone that is capable of unboxing a product that weighs around 45 to 60 lbs, then the Inside or Free delivery option is recommended.
