GB120 Tiller Shock Replacement

This guide explains how to replace the tiller shock on the Golden Technologies BuzzAround Carry-On GB120 mobility scooter. The tiller shock helps support the tiller assembly and allows smooth adjustment of the tiller angle during normal operation.

These instructions are based on manufacturer service documentation and are intended for qualified mobility equipment technicians. Always follow proper safety procedures when servicing mobility scooters.

Tools Required

  • 14mm Open-End Wrench
  • 6mm Allen Wrench
  • 5mm Allen Wrench
  • 3mm Allen Wrench
  • Punch
  • Hammer

Safety Precautions

  • Turn the scooter off before beginning service.
  • Remove the key from the key switch.
  • Remove the battery pack before performing repairs.
  • Support the tiller assembly during disassembly.
  • Retain all hardware for reinstallation.

Tiller Shock Replacement Procedure

  1. Step 1: Remove the roll pin using a punch and hammer.
  2. Step 2: Remove the tiller locking bracket.
  3. Step 3: Remove the 6mm Allen bolt securing the shock assembly.
  4. Step 4: Remove the two 5mm Allen bolts located on either side of the tiller uprights and remove the uprights.
  5. Step 5: Loosen the locking nut at the bottom of the tiller, located just above the cable bracket.
  6. Step 6: Remove the tiller shock by twisting it out from the top side.
  7. Step 7: Remove the cable from the cable bracket at the bottom of the shock.
  8. Step 8: Remove the cable bracket from the bottom of the shock and retain it for reuse.
  9. Step 9: Remove and retain the top pin from the shock by twisting it off.
  10. Step 10: Install the replacement shock by reversing steps 1 through 9.

Important Cable Routing Information

Pay close attention to the tiller cable routing before removing the original shock. Improper cable routing can prevent the tiller adjustment system from functioning correctly after reassembly.

  • The tiller cable must route over the top shock pin when viewed from the seated position.
  • The cable must route behind the shock when viewed from the seated position.
  • Incorrect routing may restrict tiller movement or prevent proper adjustment.

Reassembly Notes

  • The replacement shock may require compression during installation.
  • Verify all Allen bolts are properly tightened.
  • Confirm the roll pin is fully seated.
  • Inspect the tiller locking mechanism for proper operation.
  • Check tiller adjustment function before returning the scooter to service.

Post-Replacement Inspection

  • Verify smooth tiller adjustment throughout its range of motion.
  • Ensure the tiller locking bracket engages properly.
  • Confirm there is no binding, interference, or excessive movement.
  • Inspect cable routing for proper placement.
  • Perform an operational test before returning the scooter to the customer.
