What is an Automatic Folding Mobility Scooter

An automatic-folding scooter is one of the most user-friendly mobility scooters to own. Unlike manual-fold mobility scooters, automatic folding allows you to easily transport the scooter by eliminating the extra step of manually folding your scooter. Similar to all folding mobility scooters, these light-weight compact designs are capable of fitting in smaller spaces such as a trunk of a car or a small storage space. With a push of a button, these scooters fold up into a compact shape making them ideal for all your traveling needs with very minimal challenges.

Why Consider an Auto-Folding Scooter?

There are many reasons to consider taking the automatic-folding route. The main factor is how user-friendly and auto-fold feature really is. Skipping the extra step of manually folding your scooter can save not only time but labor as well. If you are a person with significant disabilities, automatically folding your unit will ease your process of transporting your mobility scooter. Similar to manual-folding scooters, the light-weight frame and design will give you the travel-friendly ability with the luxury of the auto-fold.

In the event that your battery dies, all automatic folding scooters have a manual override which will still allow you to fold up the scooter.

What Are The Best Automatic Folding Mobility Scooters?

If you’re thinking about investing in a mobility scooter that folds automatically, there are several great options to choose from when looking for an automatic-folding scooter. Click the links below to view our top 2 recommendations:

    1. Solax Transformer 2
    2. EV Rider

Best Auto Folding Mobility Scooter

Firstly, both are auto-folding scooters that fold and unfold with the use of a key fob/remote. The EV Rider Transport folds/unfolds with just one press of the allocated button, whereas the Solax Transformer requires two presses as a safety feature. Also, they both fold/unfold fairly quickly and almost within the same amount of time. The only thing you have to factor in is the extra key fob press for the Solax Transformer, which is a minuscule difference if pressed in a timely fashion.

Additionally, the Transformer and the Transport are meant for travel. Their lithium batteries meet the 300-watt-hour FAA guidelines and are airplane-friendly in most cases. They’re very compact, lightweight scooters and, subsequent to folding, are able to be wheeled like a piece of luggage. The handlebars of both are height-adjustable, which helps to make your travel experience a breeze.

Now, let’s go over some of the pros and cons of both scooters.

The Solax Transformer by Enhance Mobility

Pros

The Solax Transformer has been the top-selling auto-folding mobility scooter over the years! The newest 2023 models feature rear suspension and provide a smoother ride, which is rarely found in most folding mobility scooters. It’s also able to handle riding on some grass which, depending on your needs, can be a great perk.

It contains a more powerful motor than the EV Rider Transport and on a full charge can travel a distance of up to 13.5 miles. The Transformer 2 top speed is 3.7 miles per hour and it has a weight capacity of 300 pounds. One of the especially impressive specifications of this scooter is its 15-degree incline rating, which is the highest in its class.

Additional advantages of owning a Solax Transformer include its increased comfortability as opposed to its competitors. The dimensions are more accommodating for larger/taller people, providing almost 3.5” of extra legroom/foot space compared to the Transport. It also comes with removable armrests, a nicely padded seat, and a higher backrest.

Cons

Although the Solax Transformer is overall a dependable and fan-favorite scooter, it does have a couple of drawbacks. It doesn’t come with built-in lighting, so if you need/want that addition you will have to spend a little more to purchase the lighting upgrade. In addition, it has a reverse beeper that is quite loud and many customers find annoying. You are able to disengage the beeper, but it requires some work to complete as shown in the video below.

By far, the most common complaint received about the Transformer is that the steering column becomes loose. This can happen over time and with usage, however, it is fairly easy to tighten which can be seen in this video.

Lastly, it contains a removable battery that cannot be charged while it is removed. In order to charge the battery separately, the purchase of the Off-Board Charging Station is necessary.

The Transport Auto-Folding 4-Wheel by EV Rider

Pros

The EV Rider Transport is a stable, 4-Wheel scooter and is definitely the most affordable auto-fold. It’s super compact and works easily with the remote control key fob. The manufacturer, EV Rider, is based in Florida and provides exceptional support to its dealers and customers.

First and foremost, the Transport comes with a lighting kit with no additional purchase necessary. It’s located on the front and rear of the scooter and definitely outweighs the Transformer that charges extra. It also does not come with a reverse beeper, which can be considered a pro or a con depending on your preference.

One of the biggest perks of the Transport is that it’s extremely lightweight, only weighing about 56 pounds with the battery. This model can support up to 250 pounds. With a full charge, it has a travel distance of up to 10 miles and reaches a top speed of 4 miles per hour. The turning radius of 39.4” is superb, and more than 15” less than the Transformers. The shorter the turning radius, the fewer amounts of three-point turns required!

Check out the unboxing and assembly video of the Transport below.

Cons

Considering its price, we believe the Transport is a great scooter. However, it does have quite a few cons. For example, the seat, padding, and space are very limited. The backrest is about half the size of most folding scooters’ at only 9 inches tall. The legroom/foot space is relatively tight, and if you’re over the height of 5’6” it will not be as comfortable as the Transformer.

The Transport lacks a tilt adjustment for the tiller, meaning it is permanently upright. It also does not come with armrests, nor gives you the option to add them. Overall, it does not have many comfort features or upgrades to offer.

The battery pack is unable to be removed from the scooter and is commonly difficult to manage and maintain. Moreover, if your battery dies while folded you will more than likely require the help of a technician to unfold it.

Last but not least, although the Transport is a great option for flat surfaces, it has a very low incline rating of 4.8 degrees. It’s also virtually unable to drive over grass. If you require a scooter that can handle inclines and varying terrain, it is definitely not recommended.

Warranty and Service Contracts for Auto-Fold Mobility Scooters

Service contracts and warranties are different for each manufacturer. Most warranties are similar in the way they extend coverage on certain components such as the frame and structural components. They also differentiate coverage for components that are prone to wear-and-tear such as the tires. Typically, manufacturers cover the electronic components for 1-year and also offer service contracts with the warranty.

Troubleshooting Your Auto-Fold Mobility Scooter

All of our mobility products come with a user manual to assist you with troubleshooting your scooter. You can also find a link to the user manual and product brochure on the specific product page. If you are having trouble finding the manual or product brochure on the product page, give us a call and we will assist you.

Most manufacturers also offer a reference guide for beep codes that can assist you in self-diagnosing your scooter based on the sequence of beeps emitting from your scooter. When there is a problem with a scooter, typically a sequence of beeps or light flashes will indicate a particular issue. With the beep code reference sheet, you can self diagnose the issue and know exactly what the problem is. Below is an example of a beep code reference sheet from a Pride mobility scooter.

Maintaining Your Auto-Fold Mobility Scooter

Maintenence for an automatic-folding scooter is very similar to a standard mobility scooter. The most important thing to keep your scooter in top shape is to take care of the battery. Typically, auto-folding scooters come with lightweight lithium batteries, however, some come with sealed lead acid. In hotter states like Florida and Arizona, it is important to never leave your battery in a hot environment for extended periods of time. Make sure to read your scooter's user manual to learn how to properly care for your scooter's battery. The best way to ensure your battery will have a long lifespan is to never let the charge go down to 0%. Keeping your battery charged over 20% of its capacity is the best way to get the most longevity from your battery.

After extended periods of time, you may notice dirt or debris building on the mechanical and structural components of the scooter. Using a clean rag or a vacuum to clean the scooter will ensure smooth mechanics and keep your scooter folding like new.

Does Insurance Cover Auto-Folding Mobility Scooters?

If you are looking to get a mobility scooter through insurance such as Medicare, there are a couple of things you need to know. First of all, getting a scooter through insurance is a process that can take as long as 6 months, so if you're looking for something in a hurry you should definitely consider going the private-pay route. Many of our customers looking to purchase a scooter through insurance end up taking the private-pay route after researching the long process filled with red tapes. Private insurance is different and some even offer prepaid cards that you can use to spend on medical equipment, so find out with your insurance company if this is an option. Mobility Scooters Direct is a private dealer and we do not bill through insurance, however, that does not mean you can not get a scooter through us. When getting a scooter through insurance, you will most likely not get what you want. Folding and recreational scooters are not eligible for coverage but standard mobility scooters are. In some cases, your insurance company may reimburse you for the purchase of your mobility scooter, so contact your insurance provider and inquire about this option.

Delivering Your Automatic Folding Scooter - A Quick Process

Since folding scooters are light-weight and compact, they deliver much quicker than heavier units and do not require freight shipping. Typically, a lightweight auto-folding scooter can be delivered by companies such as FedEx or UPS depending on the manufacturer in 3-7 business days after the date of purchase.

With most scooters that we offer for sale, there are 3 different delivery options. Standard doorstep delivery is free, and the package will be delivered in a box right to your door. The Inside delivery option allows the carrier to bring the box inside of your home. The third and final option is the deluxe White-Glove delivery service. With white glove delivery, a technician is sent out to deliver, unbox, set up, and even show you how to use your brand new mobility unit. The White-Glove technician will also discard all boxes and leave you with your new scooter assembled and ready to be used! If you are someone with significant disabilities, we recommend the White-Glove service. However, if you are capable of handling and unboxing these light-weight units, the Standard curbside delivery is free.

Final Thoughts

Although both are great travel scooters, the Transformer definitely outshines the Transport in most categories. The Transport is great if you’re a smaller person with a smaller frame or under 5’6” in height. The Transformer is more versatile and can handle someone up to 6’.
