How Does a Mobility Scooter Work?

In a world full of mobility scooters, it can sometimes seem like there’s an overload of information. You might be wondering… how does a mobility scooter work? To answer your question, we are going to break down some of the most basic functions and characteristics of some popularly used scooters. Keep in mind: Although we’re focusing on a few specific scooters, some of this information can be applied to other makes and models as well.

In this post, we are using three different types of scooters:

1. The Pride Mobility Go-Go Sport – part of the Go-Go series, a favorite travel-friendly mobility scooter

2. The Pride Mobility Revo 2.0 – a more heavy-duty, full-size scooter

3. The Solax Transformer and the EV Rider Transport AF – two automatically folding scooters featured in our last blog post

1. The Go-Go Sport Travel Scooter by Pride Mobility

YouTube video

If you have visited a theme park or any outdoor event, you have most likely seen someone riding on one of the Go-Go series scooters. The Go-Go Sport is a very comfortable, dependable, and durable travel scooter manufactured by Pride Mobility.

It is available in a 3-wheel and a 4-wheel version. Universally, a 3-Wheel scooter has a tighter turning radius and a little extra leg room than its 4-Wheeled counterparts. However, 4-Wheel scooters are slightly more stable.

The armrests of the Go-Go flip-up/down and are adjustable in height and width. Flipping the armrests up ensures easier access when getting in and out of the scooter. Knobs located on the rear/bottom of the seat control the width of the armrest and are easily loosened/tightened by twisting them.

The seat of the Go-Go rotates 360 degrees using the lever located underneath the seat. It is compact, comfortable, and easily removable.

There is a brake lever on the rear of the scooter, which is common for many scooter models. The two modes available are neutral and drive. If you attempt to power on the scooter while in neutral, it will beep loudly. Therefore, to avoid the beeping, you must put your scooter in drive mode before turning on your scooter.

Disassembling the Scooter

The entirety of the Go-Go Sport is actually five easily disassembled pieces. Once broken down, the heaviest piece is only 35 pounds. All of Pride Mobility’s Go-Go Scooters can be broken down due to their patented “Feather-Touch Disassembly”.

To disassemble this model, simply follow the steps below:

1. Remove the seat by lifting the seat straight up.
2. Remove the battery box by lifting it straight up.
3. Lower and lock the tiller (handlebar) by using the 2 knobs on the base of the tiller.
4. Separate the rear motor assembly from the front half of the scooter.
5. Remove the basket.

To reassemble the scooter, just follow the steps in reverse order!

Battery/Charging Components

The Go-Go sport has a singular battery pack that contains both of its 12-volt batteries. The battery pack alone is one of the 5 pieces of the Go-Go Sport, meaning it is completely removable.

The batteries require an XLR charger, and there are two ports available to charge. One port is located on the inside of the tiller. The second port is on the battery box itself.

Due to the port located on the battery box and it being removable, you are able to separate and charge the pack without the scooter. This is an especially helpful feature if you live in an apartment or just want to leave your scooter in a different location.

The battery meter can be seen on the tiller and indicates how much charge you have remaining. There are five green bars, three yellow bars, and two red bars. It is recommended to keep the battery meter within the green area, and definitely charge the batteries when it falls to yellow.

Tiller Features

Equipped on most Pride models is a wraparound delta tiller (as seen in the picture above). Pride’s mobility scooters are able to be maneuvered with just a single hand. Within the handlebars of the tiller is the two throttle levers, which can be used independently to go forwards or backward.

Located on the right-hand side of the tiller is the tilt adjustment knob. It can be folded down or adjusted to any angle. Twisting counter-clockwise will loosen it and clockwise will tighten it. Additionally, there’s a place for Pride’s removable basket on the front of the tiller.
On the top of the tiller are your key ignition, battery meter, and speed control knob. The speed knob is usually marked with a turtle on the left side and a hare on the right to exemplify slower/faster speed settings.

Overall, these are most of the basic functions of the Pride Go-Go Sport mobility scooter. Once you know them, it is relatively easy to transfer that knowledge to other scooters whether it be from the Go-Go Series or other manufacturers.

2. The Revo 2.0 by Pride Mobility

YouTube video

The second type of scooter we’re outlining is the Revo 2.0, also made by Pride, which is a full-sized travel scooter. It is more heavy-duty than the Go-Go, with a heavier seat and parts.

The design of the Revo is remarkably similar to the aforementioned Go-Go Sport, with a few differences. It is available in both 3 and 4-wheel options. The tiller and tiller tilt adjustment works in the same way, as explained earlier in this post. Likewise, the seat is removable and the armrest height/width is adjustable.

Disassembly

Much like the Go-Go sport, the Pride Revo 2.0 is able to fully disassemble. The heaviest piece after disassembly is 48 pounds. However, there is an additional piece added with the Revo, so it breaks into six pieces instead of five. The difference is two separate battery boxes rather than just one.

To disassemble this model, simply follow the steps below paying attention to steps 2 and 3:

1. Remove the seat by lifting the seat straight up.
2. Remove the top-locking (left-hand side) battery box by lifting it straight up.
3. Remove the bottom (right-hand side)battery box.
4. Lower and lock the tiller (handlebar) by using the 2 knobs on the base of the tiller.
5. Separate the rear motor assembly from the front half of the scooter.
6. Remove the basket.

And to reassemble make sure to follow the steps in the opposite order.

Battery Components

The Revo 2.0 has two 12-volt batteries that combine, supplying the motor with 24-volts of power. They are held in two separate battery cases, which link together. The righthand side case goes on the bottom and must be put into place first when assembling the scooter. For them to lock in properly, the lefthand side case goes on top and must be placed after the right case.

The batteries are compatible with on-board and off-board charging. This means that much like the Go-Go, you can remove the battery cases and charge them separately from the scooter.

Additional Features

The seat is 20” wide and rotates 360 degrees. The rotation knob is located underneath the front, and middle of the seat. There are also two storage containers located underneath the seat, which can be flipped outwards and inwards. They must be flipped outwards when removing or replacing the seat, and then can be flipped inwards for inconspicuous, sleek storage.

There is a light switch located on the tiller that controls a headlight for additional safety. Other than a few stylistic differences, the Revo 2.0 functions very similarly to the Go-Go Travel Series mobility scooters.

3. The Solax Transformer by Enhance Mobility and the EV Rider Transport AF

The final type of mobility scooter we’re covering is an automatically folding travel scooter. This type differs from the first two, because instead of disassembling they fold automatically to become easily transportable.

With the Solax Transformer and Transport Auto-Folding as examples, a key fob is used to fold/unfold the models. There is also a button on each of the scooters to fold/unfold in case of emergency, key fob failure, or loss.

The auto-folding scooters are lightweight, compact units that fold into a suitcase-like form. In comparison to the Go-Go Sport, in which the heaviest singular piece is 35 pounds, the Transformer weighs 57 pounds in total (including the batteries), and the Transport AF is about 52 pounds.

Battery Components

Both the Transformer and the Transport contain four-pound, lithium-ion batteries. They are specifically made to meet the 300-watt-hour FAA guidelines. This ensures, in most cases, that you can bring the scooters and batteries on an airplane.
