Waterproof Mobility Scooters – Do They Exist?

If you’re wondering “can a mobility scooter can get wet?”, the answer is usually a resounding “NO”. However, as you can see in the video below, we have found a way to make this scooter, rain-proof.

Can I My Mobility Scooter in The Rain?

Something that we get asked about often is whether or not mobility scooters can be used in the rain. The answer is typically no, because mobility scooters are driven by electronics that like any electronic, are prone to failure when in contact with water, moisture or even oxidation that occurs from high levels of humidity over time.

While most mobility scooters made by reputable manufacturing companies are able to withstand light rain, they are not designed for prolonged exposure to rain. There are some scooters like the Afikim Afiscooter S and Afiscooter C models that have an option for a weather cover but that just uses a big canopy to protect the scooter from the rain. The truth is, that is not going to suffice if you are in a situation where the rain is so heavy that it falls down sideways.

If you own a mobility scooter, you should always do the best you can to get under shelter when you happen to unexpectedly encounter rain regardless of how heavy the rainfall is. Simply put, mobility scooters are not designed to handle rain for more than just a few moments. HOWEVER….

Our Rain-Proof Mobility Scooter Service

In 2022, our team of research and developers at Mobility Direct started testing out some high-tech waterproofing solutions and we have successfully created the first rain-proof mobility scooter. The process involves a lot of labor, we literally break down the entire mobility scooter down to the nuts and bolts. We first tested this technology on a Go Go Ultra X mobility scooter by Pride Mobility. Below you can watch the video that shows you how to break the scooter down to the nuts and bolts.

As you can see, the process of taking a scooter apart completely is in itself a project, but what you don’t see is that each electronic component needs to be coated in a proprietary waterproofing solution that our techs have tested on other applications. Some of our techs actually have a background in building and repairing drones, and they have made waterproof drones that can literally fly in the air, and they go underwater to perform like a aqua-drone. This same process is used on this Go Go Ultra X which is now, basically as close to being waterproof as possible.

Is a Rain-Proof Mobility Scooter Capable of Going Under Water?

The answer is no. The only thing you cannot do with this scooter is completely submerge it in water completely. The reason is because the transaxle motor has an axle that can let water into the motor. We are working on a solution to make a completely water proof scooter, but for now, this service will make your scooter 100% capable of handling any type of rainfall. This can be very helpful for people that live in rainy states like Washington or Florida where we are located.

If you live in Southern Florida, whether its SE or SW Florida, we have locations where you can pay for this type of service if you’re interested. Please note that it will take up to 5 business days to provide this service and the cost will depend on the type of scooter you have. Bigger scooters, tend to take more time and effort to make them rain proof. Some scooters, are not capable of being treated for rain proofing service too such as some of the recreational scooters made by E-Wheels. The process involved requires the mobility scooter controller and all electrical circuits to be coated in a solution, it can only be done on certain scooters that are modular enough to take apart every single electrical component.

We highly recommend this service to anyone that has been stuck in the rain with their mobility scooter. It’s also great for mobility product owners that carry their mobility device on an exterior vehicle lift known as a hitch lift.
