Technical Terms Guide

You may be unfamiliar with some terms that are listed under the specifications of Mobility Scooters and Power Wheelchairs. Some may be confusing while some may really be something you’ve never heard of. Don’t worry, we got your back! We’ve listed these terms to help you get an idea on what these technical terms mean. You can click on each term to know more.

Battery Type – this displays what type of batteries a scooter has. It usually shows the battery type and voltage.

Breaker – also known as a circuit breaker on mobility scooters. acts as a protective device to prevent damage to the scooter’s electrical system

Elevating Seat – seat options with motors that automatically go up and down so users can access cookies in the higher part of the cabinets in the kitchen.

Electromagnetic brakes – These are automatic brakes, and they are equipped in almost every scooter and power wheelchair. Basically, the way they work is the brakes are always on (in the locked position) unless you move the throttle. You can hear a click when you use the throttle and that click is the sound of the brakes being released temporarily. As soon you let go of the throttle the brakes lock back in.

Ground Clearance – The space between the ground and the ceiling of the bottom part of the scooter (where your feet go).

Heaviest Piece – the heaviest part of a scooter when it’s disassembled. Most of the travel scooters come apart so you can put them in the car. The heaviest piece is an important specification to know because there are customers that are older and can’t carry heavy things.

Incline Rating/Climbing Angle/Grade Climable – all three mean the same thing, it’s basically the maximum rating for hill-climbing or inclines. The standard ramp for a grocery store or parking ramp is 4.5 degrees. Most scooters offer a minimum of 6 degrees.

Manufacturer – this part shows which manufacturer the mobility scooter came from. We ONLY WORK WITH CREDIBLE brands that will support our customers when we need them to. You can see this link to search for mobility scooters according to brand.

Tiller – this is the handlebar assembly where the dash is and the steering assembly. Some are height adjustable and some can tilt forward or backward.

Tire Type – this section shows what type of tire a mobility product has. Either pneumatic tires or solid tires.

Turning Radius – The measurement of space needed to make a U-turn.

Seat to ground height – The height from the ground to the seat where you sit.

Seat Depth and Seat Width – this is the measurement of the seat where your butt goes. The distance from the front to the back is the depth, and the distance from the left to the right is the width.

Swing Away Joystick – is the joystick of Power Wheelchairs. The difference from a normal Joystick is that this can be moved out of your way for adjustment or convenience. We have a video sample of how a swing-away joystick works compared to a normal one here.
