What is a tiller on a Mobility Scooter?

The tiller is the handlebar assembly where the dash and the steering assembly are. Tillers are columns that you can use to steer the Mobility Scooter and locate the controls such as forward/reverse, speed, and turning signals. Some are height adjustable and some can tilt forward or backward. They vary depending on which model of mobility scooter you have but there are 3 types of tillers or handle bars that you can probably notice.

One is the standard tiller or handlebar. This is the standard T-shaped tiller on scooters. A perfect example is the tiller assembly on the Golden Buzzaround Carry-on (GB120). You’ll notice that it is just a T-shaped column but has the essential functions to help you steer or control the scooter. Depending on the model, there are certain features available to them like how a USB charging port is available on the GB120. Here’s how the scooter and tiller assembly looks:

There is also what we call a Delta Tiller which comes in the signature wrap-around style handlebars. The wrap-around style offers a convenient way to rest one’s hands when driving the scooter. The Pride Maxima offers a Delta Tiller that you’ll see in the pictures below.

Lastly, there is a mobility scooter that has a Sportster handlebar like what the Afikim AFISCOOTER SE has. Sportster handlebars are similar to those on a motorcycle but require more dexterity than a traditional mobility scooter to operate. At first glance, you may probably mistake it for a motorcycle and you’re not alone! Here’s how it looks and how the controls are on it.
