How Much Does a Mobility Scooter Weigh?

When you are looking for a mobility scooter, there are many different factors and specifications to consider. The weight/heaviest piece of the scooter is one of those critical components to be aware of. To make the best purchase for your unique needs, you must determine which type of scooter you can lift/transport. In this post, we will use examples from each of the three main categories of mobility scooters: folding, disassembling, and heavy-duty. By outlining their weight range and methods of transportation, we hope to answer your question: how much does a mobility scooter weigh?

1. Folding Scooters

Our first category is folding scooters, which generally do not disassemble and are more compact. They are commonly used for air and other travels due to their lightweight nature and many have FAA-compliant battery packs. The weight of a folding scooter varies depending on the brand, size, accessories, etc., but it is typically within a 40-60 pound range. Some excellent examples are our two top-selling models: the Solax Transformer by Enhance Mobility and the Buzzaround Carry-On by Golden Technologies.

The Solax Transformer

The Solax Transformer is one of the most popular folding scooters, which has features like automatic remote control folding and an airplane-friendly lithium battery. The total weight of the Transformer is 57 pounds, including batteries. Compare to many other scooters, this is considered lightweight and easier to load in/out of a car or other method of transportation. One notable feature of the Transformer is the ability to remove the battery. Without the battery, the scooter is only 53 pounds! Additionally, there is an optional upgrade for a  charging station, which would allow you to remove and charge the battery separate from the scooter.

The Buzzaround Carry-On

The Buzzaround Carry-On by Golden Technologies is another bestseller that folds remotely and has the option of an FAA-compliant battery. This folding model is unique because the seat actually can be displaced before folding. The Carry-On weighs 65.5 pounds in total and 47.5 pounds folded. This is noticeably lighter than the Transformer and therefore, slightly easier to lift. The Carry-On also folds into a very compact, suitcase-like shape to make your travels a breeze.

2. Disassembling/Travel Scooters

The second major category of mobility scooters is disassembling or travel scooters. These models are altogether heavier than folding scooters, but they can disassemble into much lighter and easier to transport pieces. The weight range for the heaviest pieces of disassembling scooters is usually between 30-80 pounds. Of course, the weights vary depending on the size, brand, and battery type. For example, we will use three different-sized disassembling scooters:

The Go-Go Elite Traveller

The Elite Traveller is part of the Go-Go series by Pride Mobility. All of the Go-Gos break down in just a few simple steps that allow you to lift/transport them easily. The Go-Go Elite Traveller comes in both a 3-Wheel and a 4-Wheel option. Both models disassemble into 5 smaller pieces with the heaviest piece being the front wheel assembly. The 3-Wheel’s heaviest piece is 29 pounds and the 4-Wheel’s is 34 pounds. Overall, the Go-Gos are the most popular and probably the most user-friendly travel/disassembling models.

The Buzzaround LX

The Buzzaround LX is manufactured by Golden Technologies and is a bit larger than the Elite Traveller. It is available in both a 3-Wheel and a 4-Wheel, and it disassembles into 6 smaller pieces. The heaviest piece of the 3-Wheel is 50 pounds, whereas the heaviest piece of the 4-Wheel is 57 pounds. However, lifting upwards of 50 pounds can be difficult, especially if you have limited mobility or a disability. Therefore, a vehicle lift might be the best way for transporting your mobility scooter.

The ZeroTurn 10 (ZT10)

The ZT10 is a 4-Wheel, more full-sized mobility scooter made by Pride Mobility. It is equipped with i-Turn technology to essentially let the scooter turn on a dime, which makes tight spaces much more accessible. This model is considered a heavy-duty scooter, but it still disassembles into smaller pieces. The heaviest piece of the ZT10 when disassembled is 75 pounds. If you are not able to lift up to 75 pounds, you have to use a different way of transport such as a vehicle lift.

3. Heavy-Duty Scooters

The last, but not least, category of scooters is heavy-duty mobility scooters. The majority of heavy-duty models do not disassemble and must be transported by either riding it long-distance or via a vehicle. The weight range of these scooters is very broad and can be anywhere between 180-450 pounds. For example, we will use two of the most popular heavy-duty scooters:

The Baja Wrangler 2

YouTube video

The Baja Wrangler 2 is the new and improved version of the fan-favorite Wrangler, made by Pride Mobility. As the ultimate heavy-duty, all-terrain scooter, it does not disassemble and is not lightweight. The unit weighs 220 without batteries and a considerable 370 pounds in total. With a travel range of up to 24 miles, it is feasible to ride the Wrangler 2 on long-distance tips. However, if you needed to transport it a vehicle lift is required. Unfortunately, due to the high weight of the scooter, only large vehicles can handle the load.

We have made several in-depth videos to showcase the abilities of the Baja Wrangler, just click this link to watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2P6JCDWynE&list=PLok6xyAR_1MYhZMhDNlW18VNKwStin4Jw&index=2

The Afiscooter S4

YouTube video

The Afiscooter S4 is the largest of the 5 models manufactured by Afikim Electric Vehicles. It is an impressive outdoor model with multiple upgrade options. Naturally, it does not disassemble and without batteries weighs a whopping 238 pounds. The total weight of an S4 can range anywhere from 342-423 pounds depending on the upgrades selected. However, if you upgrade the standard SLA batteries to our Mobility Direct exclusive lithium batteries, it decreases the batteries’ weight by half. The lithium upgrades will also drastically increase your travel range from 28-35 miles to 80-100 miles. With such a large travel range, you can ride your S4 pretty much anywhere you need. Much like the Baja Wrangler 2, if long-distance transportation is required, a sizable vehicle and a vehicle lift are necessary.

To show you just how impressive and reliable the Afiscooters are, we have dedicated an entire Youtube playlist for them. : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smv9uIlKtxg&list=PLok6xyAR_1Mbs81Vl08IFGGBsZ-0cxd9g&index=14&t=7s

Final Thoughts

When you are deciding which type of mobility scooter to purchase, it is important to keep in mind how much the scooter weighs. For an airplane-friendly and compact model, a folding scooter might work best. If you can lift 30-40 pounds and want a model to transport in the car, a travel/disassembling scooter might be a great fit. For a long-distance or off-roading model, a heavy-duty scooter is perfect!
