Here are five mobility scooter myths that have been debunked, the truth behind them, and what you should do instead.
Myth 1: It Is Fine to Leave Your Charger Plugged In 24/7
This myth can mean two different things.
Some people mean leaving the charger plugged into the wall outlet all the time, even when it is not connected to the scooter.
Other people mean leaving the charger plugged into the wall and connected to the scooter all the time.
Neither habit is ideal.
The Reality
A mobility scooter charger is an electronic device with a lifespan.
If you leave it plugged into the wall all day and all night, the charger remains energized even when it is not actively charging your scooter.
Over time, that can shorten the life of the charger.
If the charger is plugged into both the wall and the scooter constantly, there may be additional concerns depending on the charger quality, battery chemistry, and scooter design.
Many reputable OEM chargers include protections that help prevent overcharging, but not every charger is built to the same standard.
Cheap replacement chargers, incorrect chargers, damaged chargers, or low-quality lithium chargers can create safety risks.
This is especially important with lithium batteries because they require the correct charging profile and a properly designed battery management system.
What to Do Instead
Use an OEM charger whenever possible.
Follow the charging instructions in your owner’s manual.
Do not use damaged chargers, mystery chargers, or chargers that do not match your battery chemistry.
If your charger gets unusually hot, smells burnt, has damaged wiring, or behaves inconsistently, stop using it and replace it with the correct OEM charger.

Myth 2: A Green Charger Light Means Your Batteries Are Fully Charged
This is one of the most common and most confusing mobility scooter myths.
Many people assume that green always means fully charged.
That is not always true.
The Reality
On some chargers, a green light may simply mean the charger has power.
It may not mean the batteries are fully charged.
Some higher-quality chargers use two indicator lights.
One light shows that the charger is plugged into the wall and powered on.
The second light shows the actual charging status.
Those chargers are easier to understand because they help separate wall power from battery charging status.
Another confusing situation happens when batteries are extremely discharged.
Some chargers require the battery pack to be above a minimum voltage before the charger will start charging.
If the batteries drop too low, the charger may never recognize them properly.
In that case, the light may stay green even though the batteries are completely dead.
We have seen this countless times.
A customer says the charger is green, so the scooter should be charged. Then we test the batteries and find they are far below the voltage needed for the charger to begin its charging cycle.
What to Do Instead
Learn what the lights on your specific charger actually mean.
Do not assume every charger uses the same light pattern.
If your scooter will not turn on even though the charger light is green, test the battery voltage with a multimeter.

Myth 3: Lithium Batteries Are Fire Hazards
Lithium batteries get a lot of attention because people hear stories about battery fires in e-bikes, scooters, hoverboards, phones, and other electronics.
Because of that, some people assume all lithium batteries are dangerous.
That is not accurate.
The Reality
Quality lithium batteries from reputable manufacturers are generally very safe when used correctly.
Modern lithium mobility scooter batteries often include battery management systems that help monitor charging, discharging, temperature, voltage, and cell behavior.
The bigger risks usually come from poor-quality battery packs, damaged cells, incorrect chargers, physical damage, water intrusion, and low-quality products with poor quality control.
In other words, the problem is not simply that a battery is lithium.
The problem is using the wrong charger, using damaged equipment, buying questionable replacement batteries, or ignoring manufacturer instructions.

What to Do Instead
Buy lithium scooters and lithium replacement batteries from reputable brands and trusted dealers.
Use the charger approved for your exact scooter and battery chemistry.
Do not use a sealed lead acid charger on a lithium battery.
Do not use damaged lithium batteries.
Do not charge batteries that are swollen, cracked, wet, overheated, or physically damaged.

Myth 4: You Can Program a Mobility Scooter to Go Faster
This may be one of the most popular myths in the mobility scooter world.
People often ask if there is a hidden setting, secret code, controller adjustment, or programming trick that can make their scooter go faster.
In most cases, the answer is no.
The Reality
Most mobility scooters are not being held back by a secret software setting.
The top speed is limited by the scooter’s motor, controller, batteries, wiring, braking system, frame design, stability, and safety testing.
A scooter designed to travel around 4 miles per hour cannot usually be turned into an 8 mile per hour scooter with programming.
Technically, could someone make a scooter faster?
Maybe.
But it would usually require a different motor, different controller, different batteries, higher voltage, different wiring, and possibly different braking components.
At that point, you are not really programming the scooter anymore.
You are basically building a different scooter using the old frame.
That is usually not safe, practical, affordable, or worth doing.
So We Tried Rockets Instead
Since people ask us about making scooters faster all the time, we decided to have a little fun with the idea.
We made a video where we strapped rockets to a mobility scooter to see what would happen.

Important disclaimer: do not attach rockets, fireworks, jet engines, propulsion systems, or any other questionable speed-enhancing devices to your mobility scooter.

What to Do Instead
If you want a faster mobility scooter, buy a scooter that was designed from the factory to go faster.
Fast mobility scooters usually have stronger motors, larger batteries, better suspension, stronger frames, and braking systems designed for higher speeds.

Myth 5: Mobility Scooters Cannot Get Wet at All
Some people believe a mobility scooter will be ruined if it gets caught in a little rain.
That is not usually true.
But the opposite idea is also wrong.
A mobility scooter is not a boat, jet ski, or submarine.
The Reality
Many mobility scooters are built with some level of water resistance.
Some scooters have better rain resistance than others, and some may include an IPX rating that gives more information about water exposure.
Getting caught in a light rain shower does not automatically mean your scooter is destroyed.
However, water-resistant does not mean waterproof. We made a video where we modified a mobility scooter to make it as water resistant as possible, but that’s not something we recommend doing.
Heavy rain, deep puddles, flooding, pressure washing, repeated outdoor exposure, and long-term storage in wet conditions can damage electronics.
The tiller area is one of the most vulnerable places on many scooters.
The tiller may contain the key switch, throttle controls, speed knob, display, wiring, and other sensitive electronics.
If water gets into that area, it can create corrosion, shorts, intermittent problems, or expensive electrical failures.
What to Do Instead
Do not panic if you get caught in light rain.
But get out of the rain as soon as you safely can.
Carry a lightweight poncho with you when you travel.
If rain starts unexpectedly, you can drape the poncho over yourself and the tiller area to help protect the controls.
Store your scooter in a dry location whenever possible.
Never pressure wash your scooter.
Never leave it exposed to heavy rain for long periods.
If your scooter gets wet, dry it off as soon as possible and watch for unusual behavior afterward. Don’t do what we did on our Youtube channel…
