Mobility Scooter Hitch Carrier Trailers

Hitch trailers for mobility scooters attach to the hitch port of your vehicle and allow you to transport your scooter safely. The operation is typically manual and not automatic. For this reason, you can typically expect this class of mobility scooter hitch trailers to be cheaper. These are typically able to handle heavy-duty scooters if your vehicle can handle the weight and are much more affordable than an automatic hoist lift or an exterior platform lift.

Factors to Consider Prior to Purchasing a Mobility Scooter Carrier Trailer

Prior to purchasing a mobility scooter carrier trailer, you'll want to ensure a few things. First, is the specifications of the vehicle you intend to mount the mobility scooter hitch carrier to. For instance, if you have a 2004 Toyota Corolla it may not have enough strength to have the carrier and a mobility scooter. This is due to something called hitch ratings. Hitches are classified into different categories, numerically. The lower the number, the weaker. So a level 1 hitch is far weaker when compared to a level 4 hitch. You can always look at your hitch to check the class or give us a call. In order to ensure compatibility, you'll need to give one of our friendly representatives a call so we can check compatibility for you at no charge. This will help give you the peace of mind that if you select a manual hitch carrier, it will be compatible with your vehicle.

Maximum tongue weight is a critical aspect as well. The tongue weight simply means how much weight the hitch can support itself. If you load to much weight and exceed your maximum tongue weight, it can throw off the balance of your vehicle, damage your vehicle, and create a very dangerous driving condition. A recognized general limitation is about 10% of the gross trailer weight rating. Put simply, if you have a class 3 hitch with a rating of 5,000lbs, the tongue weight limit would be 500lbs.

Another important factor is the type of mobility scooter you have. Just like in the previous section, we discussed compatibility. Just because a carrier mount can be used on your vehicle, your mobility scooter might be too big. Keep in mind, there are some scooters that weigh in excess of 300lbs. So just because the carrier is compatible you also need to make sure your vehicle can handle the additional weight of your mobility scooter. For instance, a Pride Go-Go mobility scooter weighs much less than a Drive Medical Cobra GT4.

The last factor you will want to pay close attention to is the person who will be loading the mobility scooter onto the hitch trailer. You must have some strength to do this as it is not automatic. Not having the assistance of an electric motor means you or someone who loads it must have the strength to manipulate the mobility scooter as well as close the loading portion of the trailer.

While this sounds like many things to keep track of, at Mobility Scooters Direct we make it simple. Give us a call and we'll ask you a few questions. Our knowledgable team will assist you in choosing a carrier hitch trailer for mobility scooters that is right for your vehicle and mobility scooter.
